Is EMDR for me?
EMDR is a highly effective treatment for trauma. Trauma can be anything from directly experiencing a violent crime, to the loss of a loved one, to being bullied in middle school, and anything in between. It is anything that affects your sense of safety in the world. It’s not useful to compare traumas with other people’s experience. Your experience is valid, and if you’re wondering about your own trauma, there is a good chance EMDR can help.
EMDR can also be useful if you’re not sure if you’ve experienced something traumatic, but you have a hard time with feeling safe in the world, sense of belonging, feeling like you’re good enough, or feeling worthy of love. These beliefs are often the result of a past experience or experiences, and EMDR can help us to reprocess these experiences to take the power out of them and allow us to see the truth: that we are good, we belong here, and we are worthy of love and deserving of safety and protection simply because we exist.
How does it work?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It uses eye movements, sounds, or tapping (bilateral stimulation) to help us process memories, similarly to how we process things during REM sleep.
